With the recent launch of our new corporate blog, I wanted to give a quick shout-out around what CounterPath has been up to over the past little while. Honestly, the last twelve months have been a blur—In a good way.  In the last year, we have released a new version of our Bria softphone, creating a pro-sumer desktop application for PC and Mac OS customers alike; launched a suite of new Bria mobile applications, initially targeting iPhone and Android devices.; and debuted our NomadicPBX application which enables the delivery of a unified presence-based, fixed and mobile voice, and Instant Messaging/Short Message Service (IM/SMS) communications experience across multiple endpoints.

The combination of these developments, when combining the suite of Bria applications with the NomadicPBX offering and the Network Convergence Gateway solution, essentially enables CounterPath to turn the Internet into the world’s largest roaming network for Mobile Network Operators. This strategy has aided us in re-igniting relationships with some of our key customers, such as AT&T, BT (British Telecommunications PCL), Cisco Systems, Mitel and Vonage, and acquire new customers, such as Avaya, Metaswitch Networks, TELUS and Citigroup, putting CounterPath in the unique position to enable operators and enterprises alike, the ability to couple their Wireline and VoIP strategies with an integrated mobile solution.

In addition to the latest mobile offerings, we also received key patent grants in 2010 within our IP portfolio, two of which are game-changing within the VoIP industry. The combination of these two CounterPath patents, plus a third from 2009, enable a user’s home or office phone to automatically assume the user’s mobile identity, or mobile phone ID, and move active calls between the mobile and broadband networks based on the users presence. When the user leaves the home or office environment, the call is seamlessly moved to the mobile network retaining the single identity. In market terms, this is the heart of what is known as VCC or Voice Call Continuity.

In the fourth quarter of 2010, we launched the second release of our Messaging Convergence Gateway (Renamed the ‘Network Convergence Gateway for Wireline Operators’), which enables Wireline Mobility Services.  This new release may be deployed by Wireline Operators or hosted enabling the ability to extend their VoIP and messaging services “over the top” of mobile networks. This latest addition to the company’s gateway product portfolio enables CounterPath to turn the Mobile network into the world’s largest roaming network for Wireline Operators, thus further entrenching CounterPath as the “Gate-Keeper” in the Converged Services market.

Whew! I am almost out of breath. That was a lot.

This year, we are going continue to lead the way in next generation voice, messaging, presence and video applications that enrich the use of these everyday services. First, we will launch a new version of Bria, Bria 4.0, which will allow for better integration with our Bria iPhone and Android softphone applications. Second, we will enable video between our desktop and mobile softphones and offer enriched messaging by making further enhancements to our Bria iPhone and Bria Android Edition products.  (Also, look for Todd’s post next week on a preview around our mobile products.) Finally, we will continue to expand our channel partners and work with strategic customers in their deployments of fixed and mobile services and offerings.

Heading into 2011, there are more than five billion mobile subscribers eager to intersect their communications across any broadband network, in any venue, using any device—CounterPath addresses this market need with unmatched products and applications.  We are uniquely positioned to turn wires and airwaves worldwide into high ARPU generating transport pipes through a number of Unified Communications applications that are based on tightly coupled softphone and convergence servers. This application and solution portfolio will not only significantly scale revenue for us, but also for our partners and service provider customers.

‘Til next time…happy VoIP’ing
